Technical Abstract: This is one of several sections prepared by invitation for the textbook "A Practical Textbook of Veterinary Virology" edited by P.S. Paul and D.L. Reynolds, and to be published by Iowa State University Press. The textbook will be used primarily in the formal training of veterinarians who upon graduation will play an important role in the control and eradication of economically important diseases of farm animals. In this section we describe a reproductive disease of pigs called porcine parvovirus-induced reproductive failure and the means by which it is recognized, diagnosed, and prevented. The availability of this information to veterinarians involved in various aspects of swine production will assist them in keeping the U.S. swine industry competitive in the world markets and in ensuring a continued supply of palatable, wholesome, and affordable pork and pork products for the American consumer.
