Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Spray deposition, distribution, and drift produced by an airblast sprayer were evaluated at a Gleditsia triacanthos nursery. The tracer (aqueous 1% calcium nitrate) was applied with an airblast sprayer. Deposition was collected onto either leaflets or inert stub surfaces for direct electron beam analysis (EBA) or onto plastic tape for indirect conductivity analysis. A portable meteorological tower monitored ambient temperature, windspeed and direction, relative humidity and solar radiation. EBA, a combination scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive x-ray microanalysis and digital image analysis, directly identified and quantified spray residue morphologically and chemically. Ca(NO)3 residue washed from plastic collection tape was analyzed with a conductivity meter. Canopy penetration by the tracer varied according to leaf height and position relative to the sprayer. Deposition was significantly less at 5m above the ground level than at lower levels.
