Technical Abstract: Abdominal aortic aneurysm is among the top 10 causes of death of men over age 50. The pathogenesis of this condition remains mysterious, but seems to involve both destruction of connective tissue and faulty repair. Because enzymes dependent on zinc seem to initiate the process, it was suggested that angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors may be beneficial. Those inhibitors are designed to bind the active zinc site in this enzyme. It also was suggested that people who eat diets high in copper may benefit from better damage repair because connective tissue synthesis depends on enzymes containing copper.
