Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Acoustic impedance of the surface of the soil is influenced by several factors related to management and tillage practices. Surface roughness, soil porosity, and the presence of living and dead vegetation provide characteristic variation in acoustic impedance depending on the frequency at which it is measured. At frequencies below 1000 Hz there is relatively little effect of vegetation, but above 1000 Hz vegetation on the surface influences measured values. Acoustical impedance measurements show promise for providing a rapid, nondestructive characterization of surface roughness and vegetative cover of the soil surface.
