Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Late maturity, white food-grade performance and grain quality testing has been conducted from 1977 to the present. During 19 years (including 1995) of testing late maturity germplasm, 630 hybrids from public and private sources have been evaluated. Hybrids have been submitted for evaluation by two universities and 52 private companies. For 1995, 23 of 58 entries are new to the test. Early maturity, white food-grade performance and grain quality (quality data reported beginning in 1988) testing has been done since 1984. During 12 years of testing, 307 hybrids from public and private sources have been evaluated. Hybrids have been submitted for evaluation by three universities and 39 private companies. For 1995, 27 of 66 entries are new to the test and five new companies are participating. In 1986, a yellow food-grade corn testing program, similar to that for white food-grade corn, was initiated. During 10 years of testing, 303 hybrids from public and private sources have been evaluated. Hybrids have been submitted for evaluation by five universities and 39 private companies. For 1995, 32 of 43 entries are new to the test and five new companies are participating. While white food-grade corn is used mainly for dry corn meal and grits products, yellow food-grade corn is used for snack foods, such as corn chips. Grain quality data that are common across tests include test weight, kernel weight, kernel density, and pericarp removal. Additional quality variables are given for yellow food corn. Testing is supported by the American Corn Miller's Federation, the Snack Food Association, The Quaker Oats Company, and participating seed companies.
