Technical Abstract:
Expected progeny differences for stayability of beef females were developed as a tool to assist selection for sustained reproductive ability. Due to the relationship between the time a cow remains in production and the income she generates, stayability EPD also indicate components of cow profitability. Stayability EPD can be obtained from routinely reported information with no requirement for additional data collection. With these attributes, stayability may merit consideration in national cattle evaluation programs, although shortcomings certainly exist. This paper will describe stayability EPD and problems encountered with implementation of national cattle evaluations for stayability.
