Technical Abstract:
Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) is believed to be one of the most costly diseases faced by the U.S. swine industry. The disease first appeared in the U.S. in 1987 and as yet little is known about the relationship between different strains of the PRRS virus and the severity of clinical disease. In this study we found that some strains of the virus can cause severe illness in pregnant pigs, as evidenced by the death of their unborn fetuses, whereas other strains may be relatively innocuous.
