Title: REDUCTION IN THE ABUNDANCE OF HIRSUTELLA RHOSSILIENSIS CONIDIA BY RESISTANTDAUER JUVENILES

Technical Abstract: The extra cuticle (sheath) of dauer jveniles can protect them from infection by nematode-pathogenic fungi. Conidia of the fungus Hirsutella rhossiliensis adhere to the sheath of some rhabditid nematodes but do not infect. To test the hypothesis that this resistant stage could deplete the supply of H. rhossiliensis condidia in soil, we added different proportions sof resistant (with a sheath) and susceptible (sheath removed with 0.05% sodium hypochlorite) Heterorhabditis bacteriophora to soil infested with the fungus. We found that with an increasing proportion of resistant nematodes added to soil, there was a decrease in abundance of conidia. When more than 60% of the nematodes were resistant, there was a net decrease in condidia compared with soil in which no H. bacteriophora were added.
