Interpretive Summary: Cotton germplasm with improved fiber properties is needed by the textile industry and can be used by other cotton breeding programs as a means to improve fiber quality in their breeding material. Public breeding programs that develop germplasm freely distribute seed of the germplasm lines to other breeders and geneticists and have a positive effect on cotton breeding efforts. Modernization of yarn spinning technologies in the textile industry is demanding higher strength cotton. The germplasm lines PD 93030, PD 93034, and PD 93057 represent an improved level of yarn strength without a decrease in lint yield. These germplasm lines should be useful to other cotton breeders and geneticists as a source of improved fiber properties in a high-yielding genetic background.

Technical Abstract: PD 93030, PD 93034, and PD 93057 germplasm lines of cotton that combine high yield potential with excellent fiber properties were released in 1995. Each of the lines results from random single-plant selections in the F2 generation from a study of the inheritance of fiber properties in crosses among Pee Dee germplasm lines. The parentage of PD 93030 is PD 5358/PD 5485. PD 5358 is from the cross 'Delcot 311'/PD 6079, while PD 5485 is from the cross 'McNair 235'/FJA 347. The parentage of PD 93034 is PD 5285/PD 5485. PD 5285 is from the cross 'DES 422'/PD 6044. The parentage of PD 93057 is PD 5265/PD 5485. PD 5265 is from the cross 'McNair 220'/'Sealand 542'. In full-season trials averaging 170 days across three years, PD 93030 averaged 2% higher lint yield than 'PD-3', while PD 93034 and PD 93057 have averaged 9% and 10% higher lint yield, respectively, than PD-3. PD-3 is a southeastern U.S. cultivar with an unusual combination of high yield potential and good fiber and spinning properties. Only minor differences in 2.5% fiber span length, fiber strength (stelometer), and micronaire reading exist between PD-3 and the three germplasm lines. The major improvement in the three lines over PD-3 is higher yarn strength. Compared with PD-3, PD 93030 and PD 93034 averaged 4% higher yarn strength and PD 93057 averaged 3% higher yarn strength. These germplasm lines should be useful to other breeders as a source of improved yarn strength and lint yield.
