Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Pythium species are distributed worldwide. They cause seed rot and preemergence and postemergence damping off in most agricultural crops, including alfalfa. A number of Pythium species are highly pathogenic on alfalfa. A five day old culture plate test has been developed for both selecting resistant seedlings and for evaluating relative resistance among varieties. Seedlings resistant to one species may be susceptible to other species. This procedure should provide a basis for developing Pythium resistant varieties
