Technical Abstract: As a retention process, sorption of methyl bromide in the soil after injection influences the transportation of this chemical in the soil profile, and the amount and rate reaching the soil surface and then escaping into the atmosphere. In this study, the sorption and desorption of methyl bromide on soil and mineral surfaces under various moisture conditions were determined. Sorption of methyl bromide on moist sandy loam soils was limited. A linear dependence of sorption on soil moisture content was observed. At lower moisture levels, competitive sorption of water and methyl bromide on soil and mineral surfaces was obvious. Sorption on oven-dried surfaces was an order of magnitude greater than air-dried surfaces, and was closely related to the exterior surface area as measured with N2.
