Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Morphological and developmental mutants of maize are essential germplasm resources for genetics research and crop improvement. The maize genetic resource management program of the U. S. National Plant Germplasm System seeks to conserve and utilize this germplasm efficiently and effectively. This paper profiles this managerial program, which includes germplasm acquisition, maintenance, distribution, characterization, evaluation, enhancement, and database management via the Germplasm Resources Information System (GRIN) and the Maize Genome Database (MGD). Ongoing efforts to increase the efficiency and efficacy of maize genetic resource management are also described.
