Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The USDA-Water Erosion Prediction Project (WEPP) simulation model, version 94.7, was used to compute runoff and soil loss for a 24-year period of conventional tillage of corn. Simulated results were compared to observed results obtained from experimental 88 m**2 erosion plots on Mexico silt loam soil near Kingdom City, MO. Results were analyzed by crop stage periods of rough fallow (F), seed bed (SB), rapid growth (P1 and 2), reproduction and maturation (P3), and residue (P4). Additionally, all crop stage period results were aggregated into tillage year periods. Observed precipitation event intensity distributions, daily temperature extremes, and solar radiation were used with other generated climate variables to drive the WEPP model. The USLE procedure was also used to simulate soil loss. Variation of WEPP simulated runoff was generally less than variation of the observed runoff. Variation of WEPP simulated soil loss was generally less than variation of the observed soil loss, but it was more like the variation of observed soil than was the variation of the USLE simulated soil loss. Extreme values of WEPP simulated runoff and soil loss indicating a bias to under prediction of large event runoff and consequent soil loss. USLE simulated soil loss was found to have the same general bias, but the bias was greater.
