Technical Abstract: The enzymatic treatment of chrome-tanned leather waste generated in the Czech Republic was further investigated. The effect of various alkali bases, such as calcium hydroxide, and enzyme concentrations on the properties of the isolated protein and chrome products was determined. These experiments utilized processes developed by ARS at ERRC and were carried out with their cooperation. Pilot studies were run at the Tanex company, the second largest beamhouse in the Czech Republic. Enzymatic hydrolysis products were tested for ash content, chrome concentration, Bloom value, viscosity and molecular weight distribution and the data obtained correlated with that found in the studies carried out at ERRC. Characterization of the protein products will help to market these products in the Czech Republic.
