Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Peracetic acid (PAA) has become a favoured alternative to chlorination in the disinfection of municipal waste water in recent years. It is also commonly used in the food industry as a disinfectant. Based on PAA concentration, the disulfide linkage in enzymes and proteins of microorganisms can be broken and the chemiosmotic function of the cytoplasmic membrane can be interrupted. All these findings suggest that PAA could be used in recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS). Operators of such systems have to pay close attention to the water quality and health of cultivated organism.
