Interpretive Summary: Virulent strains of Newcastle disease virus cause serious disease in non-vaccinated and in poorly vaccinated poultry. The virus has been identified worldwide and poses a significant threat to U.S. poultry industries. Because of the large range of hosts and of the capacity of the virus to mutate, there are strains with different genetic characteristics circulating worldwide. Their fast identification and classification is important in order to maintain and increase the knowledge of Newcastle disease virus ecology and epidemiology. Here we provide a report on the complete genome sequence of Newcastle disease virus from Nigeria. This information will facilitate future evolutionary and epidemiological studies of Newcastle disease viruses.

Technical Abstract: The first complete genome sequence of a strain of Newcastle disease virus from genotype XIV is reported here. Strain duck/Nigeria/NG-695/KG.LOM.11-16/2009 was isolated from an apparently healthy domestic duck from a live bird market in Kogi State, Nigeria, in 2009. This strain is classified as a member of sub-genotype XIVb of class II.
