Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: A model compound was encapsulated in pectin and then extruded with thermoplastic starch to form a composite. The intended product was a food-contact tray made of biobased polymers infused with an anti-microbial agent; however, caffeine was used as the model compound in the preliminary work. The model compound was physically mixed with pectin or encapsulated through dissolution and freeze-drying. Three starches were evaluated. UV-VIS spectroscopy ('=274 nm) was utilized to measure the release of caffeine from the composite submerged in water. The release rate was delayed by at least one hour and had slower rates when encapsulated in pectin before extrusion. |
