Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Rhizoctonia solani can cause seedling damping-off and root rot in dry bean and a number of other major crops including sugarbeet, soybean, cotton, potato, etc. There appears to be an increase in reported incidence in both temperate regions and in tropical areas. As well as a root rot, some stains can cause foliar blights while other strains are non-pathogenic or beneficial to plants. Identification of the type of R. solani present in soil or plant tissue is important to determine the risk for a given crop and if there are changes in where issues are found. The type of R. solani is an important concern for breeders as resistance to the different forms can be independent. The aim of this review is to explain current concepts in Rhizoctonia solani subgroup terminology and how it impacts work with this species in the field. The review covers anastomosis groups and intraspecific groups and their importance in understanding the relationships in this important species complex.
