Interpretive Summary: The Yellow Fever mosquito (Aedes aegypti) is an important vector of Yellow fever, dengue, and chikungunya viruses in many areas of the world. More than 4000 human infections with chikungunya virus have been reported in the Caribbean area since late 2013, raising concerns that the virus could spread to the Americas. In this study, Indian and ARS scientists studied the ovicidal (egg-killing) effects of hexane, benzene, chloroform, ethyl acetate, and methanol extracts from the leaves of eupatory, a plant in the sunflower family. Maximum egg-killing effect was observed for the methanol extract, which caused death in 100% of the eggs when used at a concentration of 300 parts per million. The results suggest that leaf extracts of eupatory may have potential for control of Yellow Fever mosquitoes when the extracts are used in man-made traps or applied to the egg-laying sites used by female mosquitoes in nature.
Technical Abstract: To determine the ovicidal efficacy of different solvent leaf extracts of Ageratina adenophora against dengue vector Aedes aegypti . Methods: The ovicidal efficacy of the crude leaf extracts of A. adenophora with five different solvents (hexane, benzene, chloroform, ethyl acetate, methanol) and was tested against Ae. aegypti . The ovicidal activity was determined against Ae. aegypti mosquito to various concentrations ranging from 75-450 mg/L under the laboratory conditions. Results: All the five solvents extracts showed moderate ovicidal activity; however, the methanol extract showed the highest ovicidal activity. One hundred percent mortality was observed at 300 mg/L for leaf methanol extract of A. adenophora against Ae. aegypti. Conclusions: From the results it can be concluded that the crude extract of A. adenophora has excellent potential for controlling Ae. aegypti mosquito eggs.
