Title: Scientific and technological exchange between the U.S.A. and the people's republic of China to mitigate the impact of biting and nuisance flies and their associated diseases

Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The above group of scientists visited China through the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service, Scientific Cooperative Exchange Program (SCEP) with the People’s Republic of China from 17 May 2014 through 30 May 2014. This presentation will present highlights of the visit where we met with Chinese scientists at numerous universities, from the Ministry of Agriculture and from their three-tiered CDC organizations (national, provincial and municipal). During the two weeks, we visited the cities of Beijing, Hohhot (Inner Mongolia province in northern China), Shanghai and Haikou (southern-most China). Our topic area was “filth flies” and a previous SCEP lead by Andrew Li and Adalberto (Beto) Perez De Leon several years ago focused on ticks. This program is available for any group working on agricultural commodities of common interest. The intent of this program is to foster collaborative research between U.S.-based and China-based scientists. As a part of this process, representatives from China have the opportunity to visit each of our laboratories in the coming year. Participants are only responsible for paying their own costs to get to China (food, U.S.-based transportation, airline ticket and visa). The Chinese Ministry of Agriculture covers all costs in China for the maximum stay of 14 days. An interpreter is provided upon request and a local representative provides in-country arrangements (transportation to hotels/airports/laboratories/restaurants). We encourage participants of this conference to visit with any of the four of us if you are interested in such a program for your pest (Culicoidies, lice, mites). The paperwork is minimal and the SCEP administration is exceptionally helpful with arrangements.
