Title: A unique circovirus-like genome detected in pig feces

Interpretive Summary: Metagenomics is a field of study that enables the rapid analysis of genetic information. Using this technology, a novel virus was identified in a porcine fecal sample collected from pigs that had diarrhea. Genetic analysis of the virus revealed it is a single-stranded circular DNA virus that is distantly related to other circular DNA viruses found in fecal samples from pigs and other animals. This information demonstrates the wide diversity of circular DNA viruses that exist in nature. Additional study will be required to determine if this virus has any relationship to the clinical disease observed in the pigs.

Technical Abstract: Using a metagenomic approach and molecular cloning methods, we identified, cloned, and sequenced the complete genome of a novel circular DNA virus, porcine stool-associated virus (PoSCV4), from pig feces. Phylogenetic analysis of the deduced replication initiator protein showed that PoSCV4 is most related to fur seal feces-associated circular DNA virus.
