Technical Abstract: Candidatus Liberibacter solanacearum severely damages a wide variety of solanaceous crops including, but not limited to potato, tomato, pepper, eggplant and tobacco. This pathogen is transmitted by the potato psyllid, Bactericera (=Paratrioza) cockerelli. While expansion of the distribution of this bacterium and its vector has been well documented in the U.S. and Mexico, little is known about its distribution in Central America. Therefore, over the last year we systematically identified and confirmed Liberibacter-associated diseases and the presence of B. cockerelli in multiple crops in a number of Central American countries, using modern molecular techniques.
