Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) satellite will launch in November 2014 and will provide a suite of soil moisture products at three spatial resolutions (3, 9 and 36 km). The coarsest resolution product is based only on the passive microwave observations and the algorithm being utilized has heritage in previous missions. However, the higher resolution products utilize new algorithm approaches without this heritage and will require careful validation. SMAP is implementing a comprehensive calibration and validation plan that integrates five methodologies; in situ core sites, in situ sparse networks, model-based products, satellite-based products, and field experiments. The implementation of the plan in the Cal/Val Phase of the mission and recent activities will be presented. Also, as noted, some SMAP products are similar to current and recent satellite-based soil moisture products. Approaches for data integration will be discussed.
