It is intended as a teaching text for graduate students in toxicology departments and programs and for the examination for professional certification as a Diplomate of the American Board of Toxicology (D.A.B.T.). The chapter covers the biology of food digestion and energetics; ways to assess food intake, body composition, and energy expenditure. In addition it covers the pathobiology of energy storage after overeating. This includes the biochemistry of fat and carbohydrate metabolism and storage as fat; adaptation of fat to excess caloric intake; development of ectopic fat deposition; metabolic syndrome and type II diabetes. The text describes the effects of obesity on drug pharmacokinetics and metabolism; lifestyle modification, drug theraputic and surgical approaches to weight loss, and societal and legal aspects of the obesity epidemic.
