Technical Abstract: Bacterial leaf spot of lettuce caused by by Xanthomonas campestris pv. vitians has been affecting coastal California crops for many years and has become a chronic problem. Differences in pathogen genotypes have been demonstrated and correlated to disease responses on resistant and susceptible cultivars. In California the deployed lettuce germplasm is resistant to the strains of the pathogen formerly collected in California. This publication is a request for samples of the disease from lettuce growing regions in California to determine if the genotypes that can overcome this resistance is moving into the region.
