Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The 10th ISSCT Pathology Workshop was held in Nanning, China, from 7-11 May 2012 under the theme ‘Understanding Sugarcane Diseases for their Efficient Management’. It was the first ISSCT meeting to be held on mainland China and was sponsored by the Guangxi Academy of Agricultural Sciences (GXAAS) and the State Key Laboratory for Conservation and Utilization of Subtropical Agro-Bioresources of Guangxi University. It was an opportunity for the 40 participants from 13 countries to share their knowledge on subjects such as disease screening, fungal diseases, bacterial diseases, phytoplasma diseases, viral diseases, pathogen genomics, biosecurity and diagnostics. Industry/country reports were presented and five minutes were allocated to those presenting posters for highlighting the main findings. The keynote address of the Workshop was delivered by Dr P Rott and was entitled ‘Genome Sequencing of Pathogens for a Better Understanding and Management of Sugarcane Diseases’. Diseases that received much attention included brown rust, grassy shoot, orange rust, red rot, smut and white leaf. A discussion session was held on sugarcane rusts, particularly with respect to the spread of orange rust on a global scale. The Workshop was an opportunity for field and laboratory visits to get acquainted with the research being undertaken in the field of pathology, crop protection and sugarcane breeding in Guangxi.
