Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Although common scab is an important problem for many potato growers, it is difficult to develop cultivars with consistently high levels of resistance. In this project, we have crossed a scab resistant inbred line of S. chacoense with the S. tuberosum haploid US-W4. We used the SolCAP SNP array to genotype backcross and F2 populations. Clones were phenotyped in the field for two years and a greenhouse for one year. A single major QTL for scab resistance was identified on chromosome 11. Adapted hybrid clones that combine scab resistance with resistance to cold-induced sweetening, high specific gravity and 2n gamete production have been selected and crossed to cultivars. Field trials are underway to evaluate agronomic traits, scab resistance and processing quality in tetraploid families. In parallel, a molecular marker for scab resistance is being developed. Scab resistant clones will be released along with the marker to allow breeders to track the chromosomal segment carrying the resistance gene(s).
