Technical Abstract: Under the joint auspices of the Agrochemical and the Agricultural and Food Chemistry Divisions of the American Chemical Society, we organized a short symposium on “Human Health and Transgenic Crops” at the 244th ACS national meeting, held August 19-23, 2012 in Philadelphia, PA, to examine an array of issues dealing with this general topic. Based on some of the oral presentations from this symposium a cluster of eleven papers are included in an issue of the Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry. Four papers in this cluster deal with altering the biochemical pathway of plant secondary metabolites (e.g., anthocyanin, lignan, stilbene); two papers describe transgenic plants expressing genes (i.e., for bovine lactoferin and Bacillus thuriengensis) that confer pesticide resistance; and two papers discuss development of analytical methods for the purpose of comparing transgenic and non-transgenic organisms. Three of the papers represent short reviews: 1) mutational breeding techniques and genetic engineering approaches to improve protein and essential amino acid contents in rice grain, 2) U.S. Food and Drug Administration guidelines related to introduction of transgenic plants, and 3) safety of transgenic crops. The few papers included here do not represent all the papers presented at the symposium, nor do all of the papers of the symposium adequately deal with all of the human health issues related to transgenic crops that have been brought up.
