Interpretive Summary: Nearly all new cultivated varieties of broccoli are hybrids formed by crossing two inbred lines. The actual breeding and selection of inbred broccoli lines is a time-consuming, but necessary initial part of the entire process that ultimately culminates in the development of new hybrid varieties for use in commercial production. An ARS scientist at the U.S. Vegetable Laboratory in Charleston, South Carolina, has been developing a diverse array of inbred lines that can be useful in making hybrids. Repeated tests at the Vegetable Laboratory have identified two particular inbreds, designated USVL048 and USVL131, which were developed at Charleston and make excellent broccoli hybrids when they are crossed to other inbreds. In general, these two inbreds produce hybrids that have very good head quality attributes and that may be useful as commercial varieties. Broccoli breeders at public universities and with private industry will be interested in obtaining seed of USVL048 and USVL131, and will find these inbred lines to be valuable additions to their respective breeding programs aimed at broccoli improvement.

Technical Abstract: Two inbred lines of heading broccoli (Brassica oleracea L. var. italica), designated USVL048 and USVL131, were released by the Agricultural Research Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture in 2012. Both of the released lines are doubled haploids originally derived from another culture. As doubled haploid broccolis, both USVL048 and USVL131 are uniform, homozygous, true-breeding inbred lines. In addition, they both produce heads with high-quality characteristics and they exhibit excellent combining ability when crossed to a number of other elite broccoli inbreds.
