Technical Abstract: Metabolic syndrome is a constellation of conditions associated with elevated risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Magnesium, the fourth most abundant cation in the human body and required in over 300 enzymatic reactions, has been shown in experimental, observational, and clinical studies to improve various risk factors of metabolic syndrome. This chapter is an overview of metabolic syndrome, magnesium, and the evidence supporting the role of magnesium in ameliorating conditions associated with the syndrome in humans.
