Genome Announcements. 1(1):1. CDROM. Interpretive Summary: Newcastle disease virus (NDV) causes a serious disease in avian species and is especially important due to the economic damages it causes to the international poultry industry. The virus continues to evolve worldwide and it is important for U.S. veterinarians to be able to recognize and characterize the threat presented by highly virulent viruses present in countries with commercial links to the U.S. Here we present the presence of a highly virulent NDV strain recently isolated China that possessed a high fatality rate in chickens and infected geese. This strain represents a new genotype that was dramatically different from the LaSota vaccine strain and should be therefore further studied. The predicted amino acid sequences surrounding the cleavage site of F protein was of a typical of virulent NDV isolates and is in agreement with the results of in vivo pathogenicity tests.
Technical Abstract: Five virulent Newcastle disease virus (NDV) strains were isolated from geese in China during 2010 to 2011. The complete sequences of two NDV strains and the sequences of the envelop glyprotein genes (F and HN) of three other strains were determined. Phylogenetic analysis classified then into a new genotype, designated as genotype XII in class II, which were genetically distinct from genotype VII, the predominant genotype responsible for most outbreaks of Newcastle disease in China in recent years. This is the first report of complete genome sequences of new emerging genotype XII NDV strains isolated from geese in China.
