Technical Abstract:
Ambrosia beetles are being increasingly recognized as significant pests of field-grown ornamental nursery stock. Two species are especially problematic in ornamental nurseries, namely the black stem borer, Xylosandrus germanus, and the granulate ambrosia beetle, Xylosandrus crassiusculus. Ambrosia beetles can be difficult to manage in ornamental nurseries due to a number of reasons, including: wide host range, infestations can be difficult to detect, ability to transmit pathogenic microorganisms, proper timing of insecticides, and variable efficacy of insecticides. This article addresses a number of important topics related to the biology, behavior, and management of ambrosia beetles in ornamental nurseries.
