Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The Delta Garden Study (DGS), a cooperative agreement between Arkansas Children's Hospital Research Institute and the USDA-Agricultural Research Service, is a childhood obesity prevention research study examining the impact of a year-long school garden program on middle school students' fruit and vegetable intake and physical activity, school bonding, and academic achievement. The study is a quasi-experimental, nested, matched-pairs design utilizing 20 schools and approximately 4000 students in the Delta region of Arkansas. Though school garden programs are popular throughout the nation, very few have been designed and implemented as rigorous research studies. DGS staff will present the overall study design and timeline with a strong focus placed on the development and testing of the measurement tools used to document process and outcome indicators.
