Technical Abstract: The USDA is engaged in a comprehensive program to bring about the development and commercialization of environmentally friendly lubricants. A wide range of critical issues are being addresses through basic and applied research internally and in collaboration with industry and academia. The main thrust of research is focused on renewable oils from farm crops and animals. Key elements of the programs include: development of crops with improved oil properties for lubrication; development of additives to enhance properties of farm-based oils; chemical modification of natural oils to improve their properties or impart them new properties; characterization and investigation of the tribological properties of ingredients and formulations; testing and commercialization formulations in collaboration with stakeholders; encouraging the purchase and use of biolubricants through the The BioPreferred (SM) Program.
