Technical Abstract: Mosquitoes and sand flies are important throughout the world as nuisance pests and vectors of a variety of human and livestock diseases. Control efforts are limited often to adulticide sprays and larvicides, however, environmental concerns restrict their use. Both mosquitoes and sand flies need to feed on nectars and other plant juices for prolonged survival. For this reason, effort is underway to develop attractant toxic sugar baits (ATSBs) as a control method. In this study conducted by a scientist at CMAVE/USDA laboratory in Gainesville, FL, a range of different toxicants and formulations of toxicants were evaluated in laboratory assays against mosquitoes and sand flies. Several toxicants effective at low doses and providing rapid mortality were discovered and will provide the basis for future evaluation under field conditions. ASTBs are promising new tools for use in integrated management approaches for mosquito and sand fly control
