Interpretive Summary: This literature review searched over 100 manuscripts from several disciplines to find recent developments that may be germane to the air quality fine particulate emissions control needs of post-harvest agricultural processing. Though improvements in numerical models have been considerable, the unstable turbulent flow of a cyclonic separator defies accurate prediction across the full range of dust loadings, geometry variations and operating conditions. Laboratory validation with confirming trials in the field remains a necessity.

Technical Abstract: Research to meet the demand for ever more efficient dust cyclones continues after some eighty years. Recent trends emphasize design optimization through computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and testing design subtleties not modeled by semi-empirical equations. Improvements to current best available control technology will need to be energy-neutral, or the emissions associated with producing additional electricity will offset any emission reductions at the gin.
