Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Scientists at the Environmental Microbial and Food Safety Laboratory, ARS, have developed hyperspectral and multispectral line-scan image-based opto-electronic sensing technologies and methodologies for online agro-food quality and safety inspection. Sensing techniques including fluorescence and visible/near-infrared (VNIR) reflectance spectroscopic imaging have been used in the development of real-time online inspection platforms. An overview of the ARS approaches for the development of line-scan image-based sensing technologies for agro-food inspection and their application as rapid inspection platforms in apple and chicken processing environments is presented.
