Interpretive Summary: This species of planthopper, Taosa longula, is under study at SABCL as biocontrol of Water Hyacinth. As part of these studies it was discovered that this species was new to science and it was described last year. As most of the population consists of immature instars, in this paper, the five nymph instars are described and biological information is provided. This is collaborative work with taxonomists of La Plata University, Argentina.
Immature stages of Taosa (Cuernavaca) longula Remes Lenicov (Dictyopharidae) are described and a key for their differentiation is provided. The descriptions and biological observations of immature stages were made on specimens collected on Eichhornia crassipes (Mart.) Solms-Laubach (Pontederiaceae) in northeastern Argentina and Peru. Newly emerged nymphs, from eggs collected in the field, were reared in rearing chambers and each stage fixed to obtain all stadia. Fifth nymphal instar may be easily recognized from congeners mainly by the brown marked pattern coloration, shorter vertex and the distinguishable median carina along frons. Some biological information on behavior and developmental time is also included.
