Technical Abstract: Our climate is changing relatively rapidly now, with the most critical changes for agriculture in Oklahoma manifesting as increases in the number of intense rainfall events and prolonged droughts, wild swings in the winter and early spring between "too cold" and "too hot", and higher-than-previous overnight low temperatures during the winter. It can be difficult to assess these changes for two reason: the picture changes depending on how you examine climate and weather data, and it is easy to get lost in the flood of similar information. Most of the climate data easily available in libraries or on the web is either out of date, or not relevant to specific locations such as a small farm. In this talk, I will present examples illustrating which climate data is most relevant to small farms, discuss impacts of the rapid changes in climate on the way we make management decisions, and offer recommendations for small farmers on how to adapt in the face of increasing climate variability.
