Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The common paradigm when studying bacteria from the environment is to grow them in rich nutrient media. While this method has produced a wealth of data and greatly increased our understanding of bacterial fate and transport, these techniques cannot accurately model the organisms as they are in natural settings. It is for this reason that 11 E. coli isolates from livestock were grown in liquid media (LB) and manure extract to see the differences in phenotypic characteristics under the different growth conditions. Manure extract is used, since manure from livestock is a possible pathway for pathogenic bacteria to reach food or water supplies.
