Technical Abstract: An insect susceptible check cultivar (‘SC1149 19’), an insect resistant check cultivar (‘Ruddy’), 37 advanced dry-fleshed genotypes, and six other dry-fleshed cultivars (‘Liberty’, ‘NC Japanese’, ‘Picadito’, ‘Sumor’, ‘Tanzania’, and ‘Xushu-18’) were evaluated for insect resistance in replicated field trials at Charleston, SC. All 37 dry-fleshed genotypes had significantly less overall injury from insects (ie., higher percentage of undamaged roots), a significantly lower WDS index, and significantly less injury by flea beetles than did the susceptible check (‘SC1149-19’). Thirty-four genotypes also had significantly less injury by sweetpotato weevils than did ‘SC1149-19’.
