Citation: Hulke, B.S. 2011. Advances in breeding at USDA. Presentation at the National Sunflower Association Research Forum, January 12-13, 2011, Fargo, ND. Available: http://www.sunflowernsa.com/research/research-forum-presentations/2011/

Interpretive Summary: Genetic research of the sunflower research unit, USDA-ARS, in Fargo, ND, was discussed in a presentation to a group of producers, industry representatives, and scientists. The need for sunflower genetic research is ever increasing with more insect and disease problems nationwide. Preliminary data on experimental hybrids to combat these problems was discussed. Ongoing collaboration with other scientists in North America was illustrated. Information was provided on how to use the new SNP genetic marker system in a sunflower breeding program to achieve more genetic gain per breeding cycle.

Technical Abstract: Genetic research of the sunflower research unit, USDA-ARS, in Fargo, ND, was discussed in a presentation to a group of producers, industry representatives, and scientists. The need for sunflower genetic research is ever increasing with more insect and disease problems nationwide. Preliminary data on experimental hybrids to combat these problems was discussed. Ongoing collaboration with other scientists in North America was illustrated. Information was provided on how to effectively use genetic (or molecular) markers in sunflower breeding.
