Technical Abstract: As with most marine carnivores, Florida pompano require relatively high crude protein diets to obtain optimal growth. Precision formulations to match the dietary indispensable amino acid (IAA) pattern to a species’ requirements can be used to lower the overall dietary protein. However IAA requirements for Florida pompano remain unreported. The traditional method for quantifying IAA requirements is with a dose-response experiment, but such an approach is time consuming. Until such time as individual IAA requirements have been quantified, estimated IAA requirements can be used to decrease dietary protein and increase efficiency of diets fed to Florida pompano. The Florida pompano whole body protein profile and the quantitative requirement for a key IAA can be used to estimate the quantitative requirements for the remaining IAA. A traditional dose-response experiment with eight graded levels of crystalline L-lysine (Lys) supplemented into a basal diet with wheat gluten as an intact protein was used to determine the Lys requirement for Florida pompano reared in low-salinity. A broken saturated kinetics model was applied to the weight gain response. The Lys requirement was established as 22.5 g kg-1 diet (20.0 g available Lys). The Lys requirement and the ratio of Lys to total IAA in pompano whole body were used to estimate the requirements for the remaining IAA (Table 1). This data can be used to formulate more precise diets for Florida pompano until the requirements for the remaining individual IAA can be quantitatively established.
