Technical Abstract: Biobased ingredients possess a number of properties that makes them very desirable for applications in lubricant formulations. These include: excellent boundary properties, high viscosity index, low volatility, low traction coefficient, renewability, and biodegradability. Biobased ingredients also have a number of inherent weaknesses that make them less desirable in lubricant applications. Among these are: poor oxidation stability; unacceptably high pour point and cloud point; poor hydrolitic stability; and low biostability. Various approaches are under development or being applied to improve the inherent weaknesses of biobased raw materials. One of these methods involves chemical modification. In this presentation, recent efforts at chemical modification of biobased raw materials for improving certain properties will be discussed. In addition, efforts at establishing correlations between the structures of chemically modified biobased oils and their tribological properties will be presented.
