Technical Abstract: As aquaculture production increases, the availability of fishmeal and fish oil for aquaculture diets is dramatically decreasing. In order to optimize diets formulated to contain sustainable protein and oil products obtained from plants it will also be necessary to evaluate the potential to selectively enhance the ability of certain fish species to utilize the nutrients from which these novel diets are composed. Rainbow selected for several generations for growth on a plant-based diet show demonstrate favorable traits such as increased egg production, good disease resistance, improved morphology and growth rate, and better fillet texture. The most promising development of the selection program has been the increased growth rate of fish on plant-based diets when compared to non-selected counterparts.
