Journal of Plant Registrations. 7:1-4. Interpretive Summary: Barley is an important crop to producers in the Intermountain west area of the US, and specifically Idaho. The acreage devoted to barley has remained steady, and recent increases in price should result in an increase in barley acreage in Idaho and Montana. The release of Julie will provide producers with a variety with improved yield potential and beta-glucan content compared to the current varieties CDC Alamo and Azhul. Julie was evaluated in replicated yield trials for agronomics across multiple environments and years in Idaho. The data shows that it has superior yield potential compared to the current industry standard. Julie is expected to be adapted to both irrigated and dry land regions of Idaho. Technical Abstract: ‘Julie’, a two-rowed spring high ß-glucan barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) was developed and submitted for release in 2009 by the Agricultural Research Service-USDA, Aberdeen, ID, in cooperation with the University of Idaho Agricultural Experiment Station. Julie is a selection from the cross 10/Azhul//CDC Alamo. 10 is a selection from composite cross XXXII made by Dr Tom Ramage (USDA-ARS, Retired). Azhul is a six-rowed high ß-glucan germplasm released by the ARS and Arizona Agricultural Experiment Station and is the progenitor of most high ß-glucan cultivars and germplasm. Azhul was developed by the mutation of line 76-19-7 with diethyl sulfate. 76-19-7 has the pedigree CCXXXII/’Arimont’//’Westbar’. CDC Alamo, tested as HB340, has the pedigree SB85750/Azhul. Julie was developed using a bulk procedure with all early generation population and line development done under irrigation at Aberdeen, ID. Across 18 locations from 2007-09, ten rain-fed and eight irrigated, Julie averaged 128 percent of CDC Alamo and 78 percent of Baronesse. Across 14 locations from 2007-09, seven of both irrigated and rain-fed, Julie averaged 82 percent of Salute. Across ten locations from 2008-09 in which ß-glucan values were also determined, Julie averaged 130 percent of CDC Alamo, 75 percent of Baronesse, and 81 percent of Salute. Across 10 locations from 2008-09, Julie averaged 6.8 percent ß-glucan compared to 7.2, 3.2, and 5.8 for CDC Alamo, Baronesse, and Salute, respectively (Table 3). Across six irrigated locations Julie averaged 6.7 percent ß-glucan compared to 7.1, 3.8, and 5.7 for CDC Alamo, Baronesse, and Salute, respectively. Across four non-irrigated locations Julie averaged 7.1 percent ß-glucan compared to 7.3, 3.7, and 6.0 percent for CDC Alamo, Baronesse, and Salute, respectively. Under both irrigated and non-irrigated conditions Julie had significantly higher levels of ß-glucan than Salute and Baronesse (P<.0001 for irrigated and P=0.002 for non-irrigated locations). Under both irrigated and non-irrigated conditions, CDC Alamo had significantly higher levels of ß-glucan than Julie (P=0.001 for irrigated and P=0.008 for non-irrigated). A desire for industry is the actual yield of ß-glucan per acre. Based on the percentage ß-glucan and grain yield across 10 locations, yields of ß-glucan Kg Ha-1 were 287, 232, 207, and 302 for Julie, CDC Alamo, Baronesse, and Salute, respectively. Julie has produced significantly higher levels of ß-glucan than CDC Alamo and Baronesse, but was not significantly different than Salute. Seed of Julie from the original F8:10 progeny row was planted as a single 5.5m row, examined for off types and harvested in bulk in 2007. In the winter of 2007-08, two Kg of seed were increased as a single drill strip at Christchurch, NZ and approximately 125Kg of breeder seed were produced. 100 Kg of breeder seed was delivered to the University of Idaho Foundation Seed Program for production of Foundation seed in the summer of 2009.
