Research Project: TAXONOMY AND GENETIC DIVERSITY ASSESSMENT OF LANDSCAPE TREES AND SHRUBS

Location: Floral and Nursery Plants Research Unit

Title: Neotypification of Catalpa speciosa (Bignonioides)

Authors

Submitted to: Taxon
Publication Type: Peer Reviewed Journal
Publication Acceptance Date: October 18, 2011
Publication Date: December 15, 2011
Citation: Kirkbride, J.H., Olsen, R.T. 2011. Neotypification of Catalpa speciosa (Bignonioides). Taxon. 60(6):1760-1763.

Interpretive Summary: The northern or hardy catalpa is widely cultivated in urban areas of the eastern United States. It was discovered that there was no characteristic collection designated for it. A characteristic collection insures its proper identification by comparison. A characteristic collection is designated for the northern or hardy catalpa.

Technical Abstract: The valid publication and typification of Catalpa speciosa are discussed. The valid publication of C. bignonioides var. speciosa is clarified. Its first apparent neotypification is shown to be invalid, and a neotype is here designated for the variety.
