Technical Abstract: This book chapter for the 10th edition of Diseases of Swine describes the current state of knowledge regarding diseases of swine caused by Pasteurella multocida, including progressive atrophic rhinitis and pneumonic and septicemic pasteurellosis. Topics covered include traditional and novel typing methods and their application to understanding the epidemiology of disease, potential and suspected virulence factors , pathogenesis of infection, and immunity. Clinical signs and lesions characteristic of each disease syndrome are reviewed as are methods to prevent and control P. multocida. Methods for detection and characterization of the bacterium are also described.
