Technical Abstract:
Environmentally friendly lubricants comprise ingredients derived from natural raw materials such as those harvested from farms, forests, etc. There is a great deal of interest in such lubricants because of their potential economic, environmental, health, and safety benefits over petroleum-based products. However, successful replacement of petroleum-based lubricants with farm-based lubricants will require a concerted effort at overcoming a number of scientific and developmental hurdles. Among these are upgrading our knowledge base about the tribological properties of farm-based raw materials. Another is understanding and overcoming a number of shortcomings inherent in natural raw materials. This presentation will review recent progress in addressing the major hurdles to development of commercially competitive environmentally friendly lubricants.
