Technical Abstract: Soybean oil (SO) was polymerized by the reaction of its double bonds in the presence of a catalyst. The resulting polymer (PSO) was positively identified using a combination of FTIR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, and GPC methods. PSO was hydrolyzed into polysoaps with Na+, K+ or TEA+ (triethanol amine) counter ions and its surface/interfacial properties investigated. These soy-based polysoaps were effective at lowering the surface tension of water and the interfacial tension of water-hexadecane. Surface/interfacial properties were investigated as functions of polysoap structure, molecular weight and nature of counter ion. Surface and interfacial tension data were then analyzed to estimate the surface energies and surface energy components of the polysoaps. The effect of chemical structure on surface and interfacial energy of soybean-based polysoaps will be discussed.
